Keep Hair Healthy This Summer
We love summer for many reasons, but what we don’t love is what it does to our hair. Sun, heat, humidity, and chlorine combine to make a cocktail that’s harmful to our locks.
Out of all of these factors, sun is the number one culprit of summer hair damage. The sun’s UV rays compromise the cuticle of the hair shaft, leading to dull, dry, and frizzy hair. UV rays can also alter hair pigment, causing color to fade or change hue.
Luckily, there’s some simple tips you can follow to keep hair healthy this summer.
How to Keep Hair Healthy This Summer
1. Wear a Hat
The easiest way to keep hair healthy this summer is to sport a hat. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat will protect your hair (and your skin) from the harsh rays of the sun. We prefer lightweight straw hats, as they allow the scalp to breathe.
2. Switch to a silk or satin pillowcase
Healthier hair this season is as simple as swapping out your cotton pillowcase for a silk or satin one. Satin and silk pillowcases allow for hair to easily glide over their surface and are more gentle to your skin as well. Cotton’s rough fibers can fray and dull hair’s cuticle. Plus, cotton’s natural absorbent properties soak up hair’s moisture overnight, leaving it parched and frizzy.
3. Use a solar protectant
Styling hair with a solar protectant like Tela Beauty Organics Guardian Angel Solar Hair Serum protects hair from the sun’s damaging UV rays. Our proprietary solar hair blend naturally filters UV rays with protective, nourishing seed oils – Quinoa, Sunflower, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, and Sasha Inchi Seed Oil.
Guardian Angel adds a nice, natural sheen to air-dried hair and blowouts alike. It also prevents hair color from fading and keeps your color investment intact.
To add a lightweight gloss and protect hair, apply a dime to nickel-size amount to wet or dry hair.
4. Detangle carefully
More time spent outside means more tangles at the end of the day. Roughly brushing hair can snap the hair shafts, leading to breakage and frizz. Being smart about your detangling habits will make a world of difference!
Invest in a high-quality, boar bristle brush like our Tela Boar Bristle Hair Brush for dry hair and a wide-toothed comb for wet hair. Always brush and comb your hair with the least resistance, holding the mid-shaft of the hair and working in small sections.
When detangling wet hair, prep with a grooming product like Guardian Angel Solar Hair Serum or Healer Daily Leave In Hair Repair. Use a wide-toothed comb to gently work out knots from the ends towards the roots.
5. Get regular trims
Hair grows faster in the summer, so be prepared to make more trips to the hair salon. Contrary to popular belief, regular trims are required for healthy hair. Trims remove split ends before they spread, causing breakage and frizz. We recommend visiting your hair care professional every six weeks, and never go longer than three months without a trim!
6. Use a leave-in conditioner
Extra dry hair in the summer calls for a leave-in conditioner. Healer Daily Hair Repair is a leave-in conditioner with major thermal properties. In fact, Healer Daily Hair Repair works better with heat. So next time you’re heading out into the hot weather, apply some Healer into your hair for deep hair hydration on-the-go.
We also recommend using Healer Daily Hair Repair before swimming in a chlorinated pool, as it will protect your hair against the harsh pool chemicals.
